WHAT EVERY CAT WANTS

The other day, I unilaterally decided that certain upgrades around the homestead were in order, so I’ve convinced Steve and his female to buy me what every cat really wants more than anything in the world. Yes, that’s right… a high-tech, state-of-the-art, self-cleaning litter box!

So, once again, I turn to you, my friends in the cat blogosphere, for advice on self-cleaning litter boxes. Do they really work? What’s the best brand? Any particular problems I should look out for? And remember… I want the best! After all, now that I’m a famous “literary lion” (HA-HA), I can’t use just any old junky litter box!

I do not have any fancy litter box, so I have no advice. But I do enjoy going potty on my fancy crystal litter.

I don't know, but if you find a good one, tell us all about it (in case I want one, too). :)

Our beans have seen those high tech litter boxes in the store, but they also wondered how well they'd work. Happy Mother's Day to your mom.

I almost instantly liked my new litterbox. It's less smellier than a regular one for two cats (even when Mommy cleaned it every day) because we have the potential to be very stinky cats. But that's just me, cuz I've got a healthy attitude about going to the bathroom where I should (and love to do it in any litterbox that I know is MINE!)
However, we did switch from regular litter to crystals and that was a little weird for us, even though we dove right in once we got used to them. Some self-cleaning litterboxes HAVE to have crystals (like mine), so if your cat doesn't like crystals then you can buy a kind that takes regular.
Hope that helps! Mommy is very happy that we have one cuz it's really cut out even the smallest smell for us.

I had one awhile back. Can't remember what it was called (sorry), but it was a round one where the pan rotated in order to pass the litter through the scoop which then dumped it in the waste receptacle. I think it might have worked fine for a one cat house hold, but with 3, it didn't work well. The problem is it waited 30 minutes after the box was vacated to scoop. In that time another one of them would enter and reset the clock. By the time it actually got to scoop, there was so much waste that it was too heavy for the scoop to lift! So it got taken back and exchanged for the old fashioned (and cheaper) kind.

I've heard mixed reviews on the LitterMaid, BAD reviews on the Cat Genie, and over all the best reviews on the Litter Robot (which is also unfortunately the most expensive). I've not used any of those though so I can't speak from experience.

Hi Quasi, we just found your site. We have had a littermaid since they were invented. If you want to see a post on them that we did recently, you can go here: http://camieskitties.blogspot.com/2008/05/thursday-thirteen.html
