Goodbye Borders

As I’m sure pretty much everyone knows, big changes are afoot in the way media – including books – is delivered to the buying public. More and more, the Internet has become the premiere shopping spot for books, music, video and the like, and this change, naturally, has had a severe impact on the old “brick and mortar” way of doing business. Each day, it seems, another bookstore or music store closes their doors forever… sort of like blacksmith shops when automobiles started to catch on, or typewriter shops when computers became commonplace.

The latest victim of this change is Borders, which was previously a major bookseller right up there with Barnes & Noble. Borders’ management is saying that the company is merely restructuring and regrouping, but with so many Borders stores closing around the country, it’s pretty obvious that the end is near. The photo of The World Is Your Litter Box (above) was taken at the Borders store in downtown San Francisco, which is currently in the process of being picked clean before it closes.

Still, change is inevitable, and on the bright side, the Internet is offering all kinds of very cool options for book buyers and authors such as yours truly. For example, if you have an e-reader, you can download The World Is STILL Your Litter Box and be reading it in minutes without even having to leave your home. (Yes, I know… another shameless plug for my second book. Sorry…I couldn’t resist!)

Sad as it is to see the old ways change and disappear, it is truly exciting to be living in an age when new ideas and innovations seem to be coming at us on a daily basis. Can new advances in litter boxes and scratching posts be far behind?

PEACE DAY WISH

Sometimes, I just don’t understand humans. They can create stunning works of art, cure disease, send people into space, and come up with miraculous inventions like iPods and self-cleaning litter boxes… but they just can’t seem to stop killing each other in destructive wars that never seem to really resolve anything in the long run. Why can’t humans be more like cats? Sure we may have to do battle with an enemy cat from time to time, but hey… I even get along with most of the dogs in the neighborhood (well, some of them anyway).

On this Peace Day, my wish is that somehow, someway, humans can figure out a way to end war and coexist in harmony on Planet Earth. Maybe it will never happen, but why not at least try?

A GIANT LITTER BOX? LET'S HOPE NOT!

Today, I join with my fellow cats and all other creatures around the world (including dogs and humans) to celebrate Earth Day. I’m sure you’ll agree that we all need to do our part to care for our planet, conserve our resources, and protect our environment… otherwise, the world WILL become one big litter box!

The World Is Your Litter Box will be released in the US and Canada on May 6th. Foreign rights to the book are currently being negotiated by wheeler-dealer-type humans; however, if you live elsewhere and can’t wait for the book to be released in your country (and I just KNOW you can’t!), you can order a copy from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or any of the other on-line booksellers. BAKING SODA IN THE LITTER BOX... BAD OR GOOD?

Today, I need to call on all the cats in the blogosphere to help resolve a dispute between Steve and his female about the use of baking soda to help keep my litter box clean and reduce the odor (although it smells perfectly fine to me). Steve says “baking soda, si!,” but his female thinks it might be harmful to me if I get some on my paws and lick it off. Personally, I think Steve is correct on this one, but the female, a would-be nuclear physicist, is adamant that she's right. Of course, they'll check with my vet for the definitive answer, but fellow cats, I want to hear from you. Baking soda in the litter box… good or no good?
